Self-defense is not combat. Feel, balance and weight mean a lot in personal defense. The gun must be concealed, but it must also have a balance that allows it to be carried comfortably.

It should fit well in the hand. In the same way, the weapon should be useful for personal defense. The trigger and sights should complement the trained shooter.

There are many types of personal defense revolvers. A blunt nose .38 Special with a two inch barrel is often chosen for concealed carry.

A service-sized four-inch revolver is often chosen for home defense. Could there be only one gun that does every job well? It exists and it is a very good weapon.

The Taurus 856's original claim to fame is that it is a six-shot revolver. Well, most revolvers are six-shot pistols, but not the smallest ones. 38 years. A J-Frame revolver is sometimes called a . 38 on a .32 frame.

The little six-shot .32 became a five-shot .38. Taurus designed a slightly larger cylinder and changed the lock from the Taurus Model 85 to five shots to come with the Taurus 856.

The balance, handling and shooting of the revolver are essentially identical to other small revolvers. The Taurus Defender is a well-balanced gun that performs well on the range.

Taurus Model 856: Long Live The .38 Snubnose

The upgrades that earn the weapon the Defender moniker are simple but important. The new Defender features a larger handle that fits in the hand. There are many versions including VZ, Hogue and Taurus grips.

My example features Hogue Monogrips. They feature a sticky rubber compound that is practically ideal for most uses. Another improvement is the addition of a heavy, three-inch barrel.

This extends the sight radius, provides better balance, improves practical accuracy and also provides extra speed.

Colt's Official Police as well as Smith and Wesson's Army and Police revolvers are .38 six-shots, but are much larger than the Taurus, even though these service pistols have a short barrel.

The Colt Police Positive Special was a very popular small frame .38 that led to the Colt Detective Special. The new Defender is similar in concept to the Police Special.

To compare, I selected several revolvers for reference. I put a micrometer on the cylinder to measure the width.

As you can see, the Taurus 856 isn't that big, but the frame makes a real difference. There is a lot of steel in the cylinder. In the cylinder, the revolutions usually do not cause problems, when boosting they kill small parts.

While there's no substitute for a two-inch blunt nose mainly for concealment, the Defender has advantages that make it a better shooter. The revolver has a conventional appearance, with an exposed hammer and a double-action trigger.

There is a unique possibility of an intentional fire. My example is the stainless steel version that weighs 24 ounces. There is also a 16-ounce "Ultra Lite" version.

First, let's look at the revolver on its merits, then its advantages over the original Taurus 856. A double-action revolver makes a lot of sense for personal defense.

Few shooters have the time or initiative to train properly. Most trains run as little as possible. The revolver is easy to operate and offers a proven system.

The revolver will operate with an imperfect grip and is not sensitive to differences in power levels between ammo. In terms of shape and appearance, the Defender is a well-made revolver.

I especially like the fit around the hard to adjust side plate and the smooth trigger face. Serrated face is suitable for target work, smooth type is best for double action work.

The cylinder release is of the low catch type. It didn't rust when shooting heavy loads. The grips fit my average sized hands well. When shooting double-action, the trigger is smooth.

The Taurus has a transfer bar safety system. For many years there was competition between revolvers in the invention of safety locks, Colt's positive lock, Smiths of various designs, and the old hammer-hammer type.

A modern transfer bar system is simply the best answer. The ejection rod is protected by a cover under the barrel. The Taurus 856 does not lock to the button under the ejection bar, but to the lock on the crane.

This creates a solid block. The rear sights are well designed for a fixed caliber revolver. The big news is the frontal view day or night.

The front sight contains a tritium dot in a fluorescent circular design. It's an excellent feature for a defensive handgun.

I started the test shooting with a Federal 148 grain target. At 700 fps, recoil is moderate and accuracy is proven. The Taurus 856 Defender exhibits moderate recoil and recovers easily on recoil.

Grasp the trigger firmly, move the trigger smoothly to the rear, and allow the trigger to reset during recoil. When the sight is back on the target, fire is returned.

When ejecting cases, the three-inch barrel offers an advantage because the ejection rod is longer than the two-inch barrel variant. Keeping the muzzle pointed up, hit the ejection rod hard and shake the blanks.

I have used a Lyman Products speed loader with good results. The K-Frame version fits well. I switched to the Federal Hydra Shock + P. This 129-grain number exits the Defender barrel at 909 fps.

The recovery was pleasant and manageable. I shot the revolver at five, seven and 10 yards, using double-action fire and firing as fast as I could to reset the sights on the run.

There are not many revolvers of this size and caliber that are so easy to use properly. I really like the Taurus 856 Defender. It's a nice house weapon and carries a pistol as well as a field weapon.

It is very versatile. It doesn't slip into a pocket as easily as a two-inch revolver, but the Defender is not difficult to conceal in an internal belt holster. The Defender also has great merit as a camping or hiking revolver.

.38 Special loads are very versatile. You can load the CCI Shotgun and have a round that destroys a dangerous reptile at close range.

Whether you're interested in wild dogs or big cats, Buffalo Bore offers several loads that offer excellent shot ballistics.

For example, the Outdoorsman 158-grain hard cast SWC and 158-grain LSWC hollow point will break over 1,000 fps out of the Defender's 3-inch barrel.

That's a lot of power in the flanks of a 24 ounce revolver! The recoil is there, but so is the power.

There are many revolver holsters out there and some really good concealed carry options. These include the Galco WalkAbout Belt Holster.

The gun is worn between the pants and the body. A belt clip is attached to the waist.

You don't need heavy clothing to hide a gun, pants hide the barrel and most of the frame.
