Taurus Micro 9mm - Taurus just released what may be the most economical 9mm pistol on the market. The Taurus GX4 is the company's answer to similar pistols like the SIG P365, Springfield Hellcat, and Ruger MAX-9. He sent me a Taurus GX4 pistol a month before it was officially revealed on the web, and I got to put the gun through its paces, carry it around, and really see how much money Taurus put into this brand new gun. So today I'm going to share my thoughts on a new carry piece and hopefully give you a good idea if this is a viable option to add to your concealed carry rotation.
From what I can tell, Taurus is trying to stay away from its old habits, which include shipping guns in a cardboard box. While I don't tend to keep my guns in their original holsters, some people like to keep them nearby to keep things organized and to take their guns to the range. The GX4 comes in one similar plastic case with its two 11-round magazines, a larger alternate grip insert, and the GX4 manual.

On the other hand, I noticed that the GX4 was a whole new animal compared to their previous carry guns like the G2C and G3C. The design of the rifle is completely different from previous Taurus pistol models and even includes a brand new trigger and no manual safety, which I'm glad Taurus had the guts to do. Like most modern handguns, the GX4 has a front sliding serration and a handle that looks like a skateboard strap. The rifle also has textured memory pads on each side of the frame.

One feature that carries over from the G3C pistol to the GX4 is the beveled front end of the pistol. This tilt makes it much easier to return the gun to your holster. Included sights consist of a front sight with a white steel dot and a black rear sight. I would have preferred Taurus to take this opportunity and have white 3-dot sights or even tritium night sights as an option, but they said the GX4 would be compatible with aftermarket night sights.
After holding the gun for a few days before taking it to the range, I couldn't wait to get some rounds out of it. In dry fire testing, I found the new trigger Taurus developed for the GX4 to be absolutely phenomenal. It's not a racing trigger by any means, but it's one of the best subcompact pistol triggers I've come across. Whatever Taurus did with the GX4 trigger, they should do with their future attacker-fired semi-automatic pistols.
The extension is very minimal, about a quarter of an inch, and then there is only a small amount of barely noticeable creep before the trigger makes a clean break with zero noticeable travel. After the bullet moves downward, the trigger reset is just a hair of an eighth of an inch before it hits a good tactical reset. In my testing at home, I found the trigger weight to be about 4 pounds.
I found the grip texture to be exactly where I want it. It wasn't overly aggressive, but it wasn't. Wearing it in my standard belly band showed no signs of cracking or scratching the leather, and the Gas Nitriding Treatment slide held up well to sweat and wear. /daily wrapping with both a belly strap and a LAG tactical holster.
Taurus Introduces The Gx4xl Optics Ready Crossover Concealed Carry Pistol
I fed the GX4 a mixed diet of recycled ammo along with a bag of ammo from my "mystery box". The mystery box is usually my leftover from the factory ammo boxes, along with some of my reloads that haven't become common for me. The gun worked very well with all the ammo, and even after firing a few magazines of the remaining +P ammo, everything still worked as it should. I've had magazines in the past that wouldn't fit in a full Federal HST 147gr ammo magazine, but fit fine in the 11 round GX4 magazines made by Mec-Gar.
Bull offers several 13-round magazines that will come with the GX4, and I really wanted to try the pistols at the range. My hands aren't big, but I found my pinky on the grip only when holding the gun. I'm assuming the 13 round magazines have some kind of rosette extension which I think would have made for better accuracy with subsequent shots.
I am very impressed with the Taurus GX4. This is where the Bull proves that just because a gun is cheap, it doesn't have to be
Everything from the new magazines to the vastly improved new trigger is a huge plus in my book when it comes to this type of gun. A few things I would have liked to have seen that weren't offered, such as the factory night sights option, the optical cutout (which I assume will appear a few months after the initial release) and the inclusion of an additional train. .
First Look: Taurus G3x Pistol
Not everyone uses these things, but most of us do, and I know plenty of people who put lights and optics on all their guns. Overall, I think the Taurus GX4 is a great addition to the subcompact 9mm market and is essentially the most affordable pistol on the list unless you're looking for the extra features I mentioned above. Overall, the Taurus GX4 should make a great concealable pistol for anyone who wants a concealable and capable handgun with a healthy supply of ammo without breaking the bank.
