Like the Army's M4s and M16s, the civilian AR-15 is fed by a box magazine—a standard magazine holds 30 rounds or cartridges—that can be ejected quickly, allowing the gunner to fire more than a hundred rounds a minute. Since the ban ended in 2004, the number of guns manufactured in the United States has tripled to four million in 2013. The Colt 601 is equipped with Type A and Type B stocks. They can be seen either in their unfinished state—a reddish-brown color with visible blotches caused by loose filler in the resin—or finished with green or black lacquer. Like later types C and D, these were foam-injected for rigidity, and featured a rubber pad and sling swivel that rotated around a separate pin. On older Type A stocks, the lever could rotate completely, but this was quickly replaced by the more common split pin and is rare today.
Type A is primarily distinguished from Type B by the curved outline on the underside of the stock. While types B through E have the same general shape, type A has a very short, straight horizontal section on the underside of the wrist of the stock, which travels in a relatively sharp curve before following the straight line to the toe of the stock. Subsequently all the species examined here have different circumferences; The opening side of the receiver is long and angular with a shallow curve towards the toe. This difference is easy to miss unless one looks at it side by side (see Figure 1.2). The author would speculate that the stock change was an engineering decision, motivated by the obvious weakness in the stock wrist in the Type A design. When a shotgun is used to fire grenades, or even as a melee weapon in hand-to-hand combat, it's easy to imagine a shotgun breaking with a blunt blow.

Primarily mounted on the Colt 602, the Type C buttstock is the final type made using early manufacturing methods and materials, differing from the Type B only in color. Instead of a reddish-brown resin (usually painted, or sometimes colored, black), the Type C was made from the start with a black polymer. Sometimes staining from the filling material is still present. The easiest way to locate the Type C stock behind it is to examine the foam vent hole on the locating tab (see Figure 1.3). This tab prevents the stock from rotating once mounted on the lower receiver. While the foam vent is also present on the tab on types A and B, it can be distinguished by its shape (A) and material (A and B), as noted earlier.

The Type D stern follows the pattern of the Type C, but incorporates changes in manufacturing techniques and materials to improve durability. It is significantly heavier than earlier types, and is the style used in the USAF's M16 (Colt 604) rifles and the early M16E1 (Colt 603) rifles used by the US Army. Finally, the Type E stock is basically the same as the Type D except that the butt pad is made of hard plastic, affixed with two screws, and includes a butt trap to hold the cleaning assembly (see Figure 1.4). It also featured a fixed sling ring, similar to that found on earlier M1 "Garand" and M14 rifles.

It is tempting to view the addition of the butt trap as merely a change in keeping with tradition—in fact, every US issued since the adoption of the Springfield Model 1892 (Craig Organsen). Military rifles have cleaning tools or supplies. But the problem was more fundamental than this.
