Top Gun Ship - USS Enterprise (CVN-65) is a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier of the United States Navy. The USS Enterprise appears in Top Gun.
Built as part of the SCB 160 project, Enterprise was supposed to be the first of a series of six carriers, but the steep increase in construction costs led to the cancellation of the rest.

Enterprise is the only aircraft carrier with more than two nuclear reactors in an eight-reactor configuration, with each A2W reactor replacing one of the previously built conventional boilers. She is the only one with four rudders, two more than any other class, and has a cruiser-like hull.

Due to the high cost of construction, the Enterprise RIM-2 Terrier was launched and commissioned without a missile launcher. At first, the carrier had limited protective equipment. In late 1967, Enterprise was fitted with a Base Point Defense Missile System (BPDMS) equipped with eight Sea Sparrow launchers. In 1970-1971, a third BPDMS launcher was installed during the overhaul of the ship.
Later upgrades added two NATO Sea Sparrow (NSSM) missiles and three Mk 15 Phalanx CIWS missiles. Later, one CIWS unit was removed and two 21-cell RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missiles were added.
The facility is equipped with a radar system known as SCANFAR. SCANFAR is designed to be better than conventional orbital radars at tracking large numbers of aircraft targets. SCANFAR had two radars, AN/SPS-32 and AN/SPS-33. The AN/SPS-32 was a long-range aerial search and target acquisition radar developed by Hughes of the United States. Sea. The AN/SPS-32 operated in conjunction with the AN/SPS-33, a multi-frame system used for single-channel 3D tracking. They were installed on only two ships, the Enterprise and the cruiser USS Long Beach, and they severely damaged the ship's electrical power.
The AN/SPS-32 technology was based on vacuum tubes and the machine required constant maintenance. The SPS-32 was a slow tracking radar with a range of 400 nautical miles against large targets and 200 nautical miles against smaller, larger military targets. Rebuilt in the 1980s, these original units overlook the most spectacular view of the island.

The AN/SPS-32 and AN/SPS-33 radars suffered from premature power management problems and were not adopted by more than one ship class. Although considered the first type of "phased array" radar, the future technology of the Aegis phased array AN/SPY-1 and its electrically controlled guidance are needed to create a reliable and useful radar for the USN. .
The dome atop the SCANFAR is equipped with special electronic warfare equipment, the Andrew Alford AA-8200 dipole antennas (never given a military designation). The system consisted of six rows of antennas around the dome. Since the antennas of the two upper lines are small and fragile, they are covered by radome tubes.
The USS Enterprise is the main aircraft carrier in the film. It is first shown early in the film, where it deploys various F-14A Tomcats and builds them over the Indian Ocean. One mission resulted in the carrier deploying two F-14A Tomcats, piloted by Pete Mitchell and Bill Cortell, to intercept MiG-28s, Gooses and Merlins as RIOs. With the Maverick MiQ pilot in close control, the two managed to successfully chase them down. However, the Cougar was weakened after encountering one of the MiGs, which caused it to lose focus and run out of fuel mid-flight. Maverick manages to return the crippled Cougar to the carrier, nearly crashing it. As a result, Cougar leaves the Navy to see his family, and Maverick and Goose are sent to replace him.
It is also used in the climax when the USS Enterprise, Maverick, Iceman, Slider and Hollywood SS Layton are called to deal with a crisis when they enter enemy waters. Hollywood and Iceman take off first, Maverick on standby. But Hollywood and its RIO Wolfman were shot down by a MiG-28. This allows Maverick and his new RIO to put Merlin on standby so he can help Iceman. After another jet wash, while dealing with Gaz's torture and death, Maverick manages to shoot down 3 MiGs and Iceman only shoots one, forcing the other jet to turn back. Upon their return, Maverick and Iceman gain each other's respect, while Hollywood and Wolfman successfully escape. Following the mission, Maverick threw Nut's dog tags into the ocean, leaving his former friend's death behind. Cmdr. Dave Hecht of Navy Atlantic said the crew will have a photo of the F/A-18 carrier taking off and landing during filming.
